State Of The Art Facility
A McDowell County school has unveiled a fitness center it won as part of a national promotion.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin joined Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils, state and local leaders, parents, along with students, faculty and staff from Southside K-8 to cut the ribbon on the school’s brand new state-of-the-art Live Positively Fitness Center.
Southside K-8 is one of three West Virginia schools celebrating new fitness centers this week. The fitness centers were awarded to schools that demonstrated innovative ways in promoting physical activity and wellness to their students.
Southside was one of three West Virginia schools selected this year to receive $100,000 worth of physical education equipment. The grants were from the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Council as part of a public-private partnership.
The other schools were Stratton Elementary in Beckley and Wheeling's Bridge Street Middle School.
Priority was given to schools with a high percentage of participation in free and reduced-price meal programs; those with a significant proportion of students considered to be overweight or obese compared to the state average; and schools demonstrating a robust plan for using the equipment.
