NITRO Alaira Evans scored 16 points and Brooke Christian tallied her first career double-double as Class AA No. 7 Chapmanville handed Class AAA No. 3 Nitro its first loss of the season Tuesday night at Alumni Arena.
Christian scored 12 points and hauled down 10 rebounds as Chapmanville led 15-3 after one quarter of play on its way to a 44-31 win over the previously unbeaten Lady Wildcats.
Chapmanville coach Kristina Gore, who questioned her team's intensity after last week's two-point loss to Class AA co-No. 4 Summers County, called Tuesday's win a great team victory with everyone making contributions especially Christian.
"Really pleased with how Brooke has been stepping up for us," Gore said. "She's becoming a lot more confident and aggressive offensively, which is great to see."
Taylor Maddox led Nitro with 12 points. Maddox was the only player in double figures for the Wildcats, who were held 10 field goals.
"The difference for us was our defensive effort. We dominated that phase of the game and really made them work for any opportunities they got," Gore said. "We didn't shoot ball particularly well tonight, had a lot of open opportunities we missed out on, but our defense allowed us to stay in control of the game."
Nitro (6-1) will travel to Sissonville Saturday afternoon while Chapmanville (7-3) looks for another signature win on Saturday when they face Class AAA No. 5 Robert C. Byrd in the Wildcat Classic Premiere Hoops Showcase at Logan's Willie Akers Arena.
