CHARLESTON The West Virginia Parkways Authority is preparing to open the newly constructed Beckley Travel Plaza along the West Virginia Turnpike, with final preparations underway.
Parkways Executive Director Jeff Miller said the project is nearing completion, with the grand opening announcement expected soon. The Beckley plaza, rebuilt by Saint Albans-based contractor Paramount Builders for $122.8 million, will offer several new features, including expanded dining options, additional parking, and electric vehicle charging stations.
The Bluestone Travel Plaza, also undergoing reconstruction, is slightly behind Beckley in its timeline. Demolition of the old facilities began in spring 2023, and work on the Morton Travel Plaza in Kanawha County is scheduled to start next spring at an estimated cost of $40 million.
Miller expressed hope that the Beckley plaza will be open in time to serve holiday travelers. He noted that operators are currently installing restaurant equipment, with fifty employees already hired during a recent job fair.
The new Beckley plaza will feature restaurants such as Wendy’s, Starbucks, and Popeyes, along with a 24-hour convenience store and outdoor dining options, including a permanent food-truck-style structure. The plaza will also house a Tamarack artisans area showcasing local crafts.
Additional upgrades include fifty new parking spaces for tractor-trailers and sixteen electric vehicle charging stations, enhancing amenities for travelers along the busy turnpike corridor.
