Blevins, Dean lead Tigers past Skyhawks

MADISON Sal Dean had 28 points, Zion Blevins scored 22 points and Chapmanville used a strong second and third quarter to erase a first quarter deficit on Tuesday night to defeat Scott 70-48, giving the Tigers at least a share of the Cardinal Conference.


Dean knocked down six 3-pointers, had four steals, three assists and three rebounds while Blevins was 10 of 14 from the field finishing with nine rebounds for the Tigers (15-3, 8-1 Cardinal Conference), who can clinch the Cardinal Conference with a win on Feb. 21 at Sissonville.


The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Chapmanville, who can lock up the top seed in the Class AA Region 3 Section 2 tournament with a win Saturday night over Mingo Central.


Reece Carden led Scott (12-9, 5-5 Cardinal) with 20 points while Jayden Sharps had 10 points and Kadin Clemons added seven points and six rebounds.


In a battle of top 10 teams in their respective classes, Scott, who is ranked seventh in Class AAA led by as many six points in the first quarter before settling for a 17-15 lead after one quarter of play over Chapmanville, ranked fourth in Class AA.


After trailing for the majority of the first half, the Tigers put together a 15-2 second quarter run to take a 31-22 lead following a 10-foot jumper from Blevins with 53 seconds remaining in the opening half. The Skyhawks scored the final three points of the half and trailed the Tigers by six, 31-25 at halftime.


Scott closed the gap to four points, 31-27, on a short jumper from Sharps with 7:36 to play in the third, but Chapmanville closed the quarter on a 19-5 run and led 50-32 after three quarters of play.


Dean’s sixth and final 3-pointer of the night gave Chapmanville its largest lead of the contest, 60-34, with 5:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.


Scott put together an 8-0 run to draw within 18 points, 60-42, on Isaac Setser’s first and only field goal of the evening with 4:28 to play.


Chapmanville shot 50.9% from the field making 29 of its 57 shots and was 9 of 24 from the 3-point arc. Scott shot 37.5% from the field and made 18 of 48 shots including a 7 for 27 showing from 3.


Chapmanville outrebounded Scott 31-24 and forced 16 turnovers, 10 of which coming in the second half.
