Central rallies from 18 down to defeat Chapmanville

WHELLING   Class AA No. 2 Wheeling Central rallied from an 18-point third quarter deficit to defeat Class AAA co-No. 7 Chapmanville 67-66 Friday afternoon at Coach Skip Prosser Court.


Eli Sancomb scored 29 points and Tyler Dean added 24 to lead the Maroon Knights (19-2), who won their seventh straight game.


Dean drilled a 3-pointer, his sixth 3-pointer of the contest, with 21 seconds remaining to bring the Maroon Knights to within one, 66-65. Keaton Terry was immediately fouled on the inbound with 19 seconds remaining.


Terry missed both free throws and Sancomb hauled down the rebound and drove the length of the court for a layup with nine seconds to play to give Central a 67-66 lead.


Dakota Dalton was whistled for a travel with two seconds remaining and Max Olejasz was fouled with one second on the ensuing inbounds pass.


Olejasz missed both free throws, but Chapmanville was unable to get off a shot as Benji Adkins rebounded the second miss.


Wheeling Central ended the game on an 18-6 run and held the Tigers to nine fourth quarter points after allowing 19 points in each of the first three quarters.


Chapmanville led 57-39 after a Jay Brock layup with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter before Wheeling Central chipped away in the final moments of the third quarter, ending the third on a 7-0 run and trimming the deficit to 11 points, 57-46, as the buzzer sounded to end the third.


Joey Gollihue led Chapmanville with 27 points and Terry added 19 for the Tigers (13-7).
