WHEELING Chapmanville High School sits in third place following day one of the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Class AA State Golf Tournament at Wheeling's Oglebay Resort Tuesday afternoon.
Chapmanville (+50) enters Wednesday's final round 11 shots back of second place Wheeling Central and 24 shots off the pace of first place Shady Spring.
Justus Mann (+14) is tied for seventh in the Class AA individuals and teammate Cam Wooten (+17) is tied for 10th overall. The top eight and ties earn All-Tournament honors, which Mann and Wheeling Central's Rowen Parker currently share, one shot ahead Lewis County's Scott Underwood (+16).
Chapmanville qualified for the state tournament after finishing runner-up to Ripley in the Class AA Region 4 Golf Tournament. The Vikings shot a 223 and were 13-strokes better than Chapmanville, who shot a 236.
Also for Chapmanville, Gavin Stollings (+19) is tied for 16th and Isaac Walters (+31) is 33rd after day one.
Logan's Devin Maynard qualified for the Class A state tournament as an individual after posting a score of 86 in the Class A Region IV Golf Tournament. After day one of the state tournament, Maynard fired a round of 97 and is tied for 25th with Tyler Consolidated's John Smith.
Shady Spring (+26) leads Class AA by 13-shots over Wheeling Central (+39). Chapmanville (+50) third, Ripley (+58) fourth followed by Williamstown (+60), Hampshire (+78), Lewis County (+79) and Nicholas County (+82).
Luke Tiu, of Wheeling Central, and Cooper Ward, of Shady Spring, share the Class AA individual lead after 18 holes. Tiu and Ward both shot a 4-over par round of 75 and are five shots ahead of Shady Spring's Tyler Beard (+9) with Frankfort's Bryson Moorehead (+10) fourth and Shady Spring teammates Grant Winkler (+13) and Jackson Williams (+13) tied for fifth.
Mann (+14) and Parker (+14) are tied for seventh while Underwood (+15) is eighth followed by five golfers; Ripley's Austin Donohew and Cameron Good, Williamstown's Wyatt Siley, Nicholas County's Maddox Smallwood and Wooten, tied for 10th at 17-over par.
Cabell Midland leads the way in Class AAA. The Knights (+15) own a 13-stroke lead over Hurricane (+28). University (+32) is third, George Washington (+34) fourth followed by Washington (+39), Wheeling Park (+44), Greenbrier East (+51) and Martinsburg (+67) rounding out the Class AAA field.
Ten golfers are within seven shots of the Class AAA individual lead, which is held by Cabell Midland's Jack Michael. Michael shot a 2-over par and is five shots out in front of Washington's Tommy Evans and Winfield's Stephen McDavid, both of whom shot a 5-over par. Hurricane's John Gooden (+6) and Cabell Midland's Wyatt Maynard (+6) are tied for fourth four shots back.
Cabell Midland's Alex White (+7) is sixth with Greenbrier East's Isaac Hutchinson, Morgantown's Gabe Watson and Hurricane's Kellen Pauley, all at 8-over par, tied for seventh and University's Adam Argabrite (+9) is 10th.
St. Marys shot a team total of 40-over par and leads Class A by one stroke over Gilmer County, who shot a 41-over par. Wahama (+50) is third, Charleston Catholic (+52) fourth and Petersburg (+55) is fifth. Rounding out the top eight is Midland Trail (+75), Tyler Consolidated (+84) and Ravenswood (+93).
The individual race in Class A is just as close as the team race. Three golfers are tied for the top spot at 8-over par, two golfers are two shots back and the top 15 separated by just 10 strokes.
Montcalm's Rocky Frye, Charleston Catholic's Will Gruse and Wahama's Grant Roush share the lead after day one after each shot a 79. St. Marys Trent Renner and Gilmer County's Seth Stewart are one back after firing a 9-over par and tied for fourth.
East Hardy's Jordan Teets (+11) is three back in sixth, St. Marys Preston Lawhon (+12) is four shots off the pace in seventh, Gilmer County's Braylon Mencer (+13) is eighth and Charleston Catholic's Ben Carew (+15) is ninth.
Three golfers, River View's Andrew Addair, Ravenswood's Marshall Creel and Petersburg's Lucas Riggleman shot a 16-over par and are tied for 10th.
The state tournament wraps up Wednesday with the crowning of the first state champions of the 2024-2025 school year.
