WHEELING Chapmanville High School tied for third in the team standings and junior Justus Mann earned all-tournament honors on the final day of the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Class AA State Golf Tournament at Oglebay Resort Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers shot a 533 and tied with Ripley for third place in the Class AA team standings. Shady Spring shot a 485 and won the team title by 17-strokes over runner-up Wheeling Central.
Lewis County was fifth with a team score of 560, Williamstown (561) finished sixth and Hampshire (569) and Nicholas County (571) were seventh and eighth respectively.
Mann started the day tied for seventh in the individual competition, two shots ahead of ninth place Scott Underwood of Lewis County.
Mann, who shot an 85 in the first round, knocked one stroke off his first-round total, firing an 84 to finish the two-day event with a total of 169 and a sixth-place finish.
The finish was good enough to garner Mann a spot on the Class AA All Tournament team.
Cam Wooten shot a 181 and finished tied for 14th, Gavin Stollings tied for 18th with a 184 and Isaac Walters tied for 33rd after shooting a 201 for the Tigers.
Luke Tiu of Wheeling Central shot a final round 79 to lead all individuals in Class AA. Tiu finished with a two-round total of 154 and finished three strokes better than runner-up Tyler Beard of Shady Spring.
Shady Spring’s Cooper Ward, who shared the first-round lead with Tiu, shot a final round 87 and was third after a two-day total of 162. Underwood was fourth with a score of 165, Jackson Williams of Shady Spring shot a 167 to finish fifth. Frankfort’s Bryson Moorehead and Shady Spring’s Grant Winkler each shot a 170 to tie for seventh completing the Class AA All-Tournament team.
Logan High School’s Devin Maynard finished 23rd in the Class A individual competition. Maynard shot an opening round 97, but improved by nine strokes, shooting a second round 88 to finish the state tournament with a score of 184.
East Hardy’s Jordan Teets took home the Class individual title after shooting a second round 74. Teets finished with a score of 156 and was two shots better than St. Marys’ Trent Renner, who claimed runner-up honors with a 158.
Rocky Frye (162) of Montcalm finished third, Wahama’s Grant Roush (163) fourth, Charleston Catholic’s Will Gruse (164) was fifth.
Rounding out the Class A All-Tournament team was St. Marys’ Preston Lawhon (167), Charleston Catholic’s Ben Carew (169) and Gilmer County’s Braylon Mencer (172) and St. Marys’ Tripp Morrison (172).
St. Marys shot a 497 to win the Class A championship. The Blue Devils, who have won three state championships since 2020, were 17 shots better that runner-up Charleston Catholic. The Irish shot a 514.
Gilmer County, who was one shot off the lead after Tuesday’s first round, shot 62-over par Wednesday and finished third with a score of 529. Petersburg (535) was fourth, Wahama (540) fifth, Midland Trail (567) sixth, Tyler Consolidated (590) seventh and Ravenswood (601) was eighth.
In Class AAA, Cabell Midland finished 20 strokes ahead of runner-up Hurricane. Led by Class AAA individual champion Jack Michael, the Knights led wire-to-wire finishing with 31 over par and shooting 457 as a team.
Hurricane shot a 477 to finish 18 strokes better than University (495), who finished third. Washington (496) was fourth, George Washington (498) finished fifth, Wheeling Park (505) sixth, Greenbrier East (519) seventh and Martinsburg (552) eighth.
Tommy Evans of Washington shot a 154 to finish second in the individual competition while Greenbrier East’s Isaac Hutchinson and Hurricane’s Kellen Pauley tied for third after shooting a 156.
The rest of the Class AAA All-Tournament team included Cabell Midland teammates Carson Sergent and Alex White, who tied for fifth with a score of 157. Hurricane’s Josh Gooden shot a 158 and Winfield’s Stephen McDavid (159) were seventh and eighth respectively.
