CHARLESTON, WVa A former Logan police officer will be sentenced Thursday after previously being found guilty of using excessive force.
A federal jury handed down a guilty verdict for Everett Maynard in November. A jury found Maynard violated the civil rights of a man in custody.
The jury heard evidence showing Maynard assaulted a man identified as “R.W.” in the bathroom of the Logan Police Department before dragging him into another room. Moreover, Maynard rammed the man’s head against a door frame and the suspect was left unconscious after the assault.
Th victim suffered a broken shoulder, a broken nose and a cut to his head that required staples.
Maynard faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Irene Berger.
