WINFIELD Karson Frye and Xaiver Hensley combined on a two-hit shutout to lead reigning Class AA champion Winfield to a 2-0 win over visiting Logan in Cardinal Conference baseball action on Monday evening at Winfield High School.
Winfield, which defeated Logan in last year's Class AA Region IV championship denying the Wildcats an opportunity at a three-peat, improved to 7-0 on the year. Logan dropped its first game of the season to fall to 2-1 overall.
Frye allowed just one hit, struck out 14 and walked six in 5.2 innings to earn the win for the Generals. Hensley allowed one hit and struck out one in 1.1 innings to pick up the save.
Ivan Miller and Cross Conn threw exceptionally well in defeat. Miller allowed two runs on two hits, struck out nine and walked one in four innings of work for the Wildcats while Conn allowed two hits, struck out one and walked one in two innings.
The Generals got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first inning. Preston Keiffer scored on an error to stake Winfield to an early 1-0 lead. Hensley scored on Blake Withrow's groundout to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Generals two-run first came after Logan wasted its best scoring opportunity in the top of first inning. The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out but were unable to score any runs.
McCormick Ilderton and Miller each had one hit for Logan.
Withrow had one hit and drove in one run while Keiffer and Hensley each had one hit and scored one run and Ean Cox had a triple for Winfield.
Logan is back in action Thursday evening at Ripley.
