CHAPMANVILLE Coleton Hellems threw for two touchdowns and Braden Johnson had a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown to lead Nicholas County to a 20-7 win over Chapmanville Friday night at Barker Stadium.
With Chapmanville driving in the second quarter of a scoreless contest, Johnson stepped in front of a Dakota Dalton pass, intercepting it and taking it back 99 yards for the game’s first touchdown to put the Grizzlies up 7-0 with 9:35 to play before halftime.
Chapmanville was forced to punt on its next possession, pinning the Grizzlies at their own 9 with 8:15 to play in the quarter, however, Hellems engineered a 14-play drive that chewed up 6:46 ending with a 22-yard touchdown reception to Devin Nash with 1:29 to play to put Nicholas County up 14-0 following Colton Burkhammer’s extra point.
Hellems completed 5 of 8 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Nash caught three passed for 70 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 77 yards on 17 attempts for the Grizzlies.
Chapmanville scored its lone touchdown with 8:28 remaining in the fourth quarter when Robert Cook scored from 2-yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7 following Jonathan Ferrell’s extra point.
Cook rushed for 78 yards on 15 attempts and scored one touchdown while Dalton completed 13 of 25 passes for 129 yards and was intercepted three times. Jeremy Collins hauled in seven receptions for 55 yards and Eli Pridemore added 42 yards on eight carries.
Hellems connected with Nash for a 37-yard touchdown with 4:57 remaining in the fourth to extend Nicholas County’s lead to 20-7.
Nicholas County (1-1) will host Independence Friday night while Chapmanville (1-1) travels to Winfield.
