Hillbillies suffer fifth straight loss, falling to Sherman 57-44

Bill Lusk | WVOW Sports

MAN A slow first quarter start and turnovers cost the Man Hillbillies against the Sherman Tide Tuesday night as the Hillbillies fell 57-44 for a fifth consecutive loss.

Man scored just seven points in the first quarter, never led in the contest and trailed by as many as 17 points as Sherman snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Hillbillies.

It was the first win for Sherman over Man since defeating the Hillbillies, 61-58, on Feb. 20, 2018, at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

AJ Skeens posted a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds as Sherman won its third game of the year. Skeens also dished out a team high three assists in the victory.

Bryce Mills added nine points for the Tide, while Andrew Simpson had eight and Logan Baldwin seven.

Sherman led 11-7 after one quarter and led by eight, 19-11, on Luke Tagliente's 3-pointer with 5:30 to play before halftime.

Man answered with a 7-2 run and pulled to within three, 21-18, on a Jaylend Gillispie layup with 2:57 to play in the first half.

A 7-0 Tide run in the final 2:57 of the first half put Sherman ahead 28-18 at the break. Sherman made 39% of its shots in the first half while Man shot 34%. The Tide was 11 of 28 from the floor and 4 of 17 from beyond the arc while the Hillbillies made 8 of 23 shots but was only 1 of 7 on 3-point attempts.

Sherman stretched its lead to 12 points in the third quarter before Man closed to within seven points. Man trailed by eight points, 39-31, after a Caleb Vance 3 with 0:39 remaining in the quarter and appeared to have momentum as the quarter came to a close, however, that momentum was short lived as Simpson banked in a 3 from halfcourt as time expired giving the Tide a 42-31 lead after three quarters.

Chris Isaacs posted a double-double for Man finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds and also had four blocks for the Hillbillies. Vance scored nine points while Colton Miller finished with eight points and a team-high four assists.

Sherman (3-4) returns to action Friday night at home against River View.

It is the first time Man has lost five consecutive games since the Hillbillies lost 25 in a row from March 1, 2016, to Dec. 18, 2017.

Man, now 1-5 on the year and off to its worst start since the 2016-17 season, will look to snap its losing streak on Friday at home against Tolsia.
