INSTITUTE Logan used a 40-25 run spanning two quarters to turn a one-point lead into a 16-point lead before holding off late Doddridge County fourth quarter rally for a 56-51 win Monday afternoon in the Snyder of Berlin Utz Snacks Shootout at the Walker Convocation Center on the campus of West Virginia State University.
Logan, the seventh-ranked in Class AA, led 17-16 with 4:46 to play in the first half after Doddridge County's Kim Adams layup, from there the Lady Wildcats scored eight straight points and closed the half on a 12-5 run to take a 29-21 halftime lead.
Halle Crouse converted a 3-point play with 1:49 to play in the third quarter to give Logan it's largest lead, 45-29, before the Class AA No. 10 Lady Bulldogs closed with a 6-0 run to pull within 10 points, 45-35, after three quarters.
Aleigh Cheeseman made two free throws with 7:36 to play to bring Doddridge County within eight, 45-37, before Logan extended the lead to 14 points on three different occasions in the fourth quarter, the last coming when Addyson Amick scored with 5:09 remaining to give the Lady Wildcats a 55-41 advantage.
Doddridge County outscored Logan 10-1 in the final five minutes, but the Lady Bulldogs fell victim to a 2:33 scoring drought before scoring the final basket with 0:25 remaining.
Despite being held scoreless for the final five minutes, Logan won its seventh straight game, improving to 14-5, and was able to pick up another win over a ranked Class AA opponent that will go a long way in determining regional seeding.
Crouse was named Game Changer Player of the Game after finishing with 15 points, five rebounds and five steals for Logan. Amick had 14 points and Jaycee Blair 13.
Cheeseman led all scorers with 24 points and Kim Adams added nine for Doddridge County, who saw its record fall to 12-7 with the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action Wednesday night at Robert C. Byrd while Logan will travel to Class AAA No. 2 Greenbrier East Saturday afternoon before closing out the season at home Monday against Poca.
