LOGAN   A pair of local girls basketball teams are set to begin their quest for a regional championship tonight.

Both Chapmanville and Logan are set for action Friday night in their respective regions with a berth in one of two regional co-finals on the line.

Class AA No. 5 Logan has been one of the hottest teams to close the season. The ended the season with a 15-6 record. All six of the Lady Wildcats losses were to teams ranked fifth or higher in their respective classes of the Associated Press poll.

The Lady Wildcats were hit hard with injuries and illness during the first half of the season in which Logan suffered four of their six losses.

Logan started the second half with a loss at Charleston Catholic but closed the regular season with wins in eight of its last nine games.

Tonight, the second-seeded Lady Wildcats host seventh-seeded and winless Clay County in a game that Logan will be heavily favored in given the comparisons in schedules.

Clay County is 0-7 against Doddridge County, Herbert Hoover, Poca and Roane County and have been outscored by an average of 28.7 points. Logan is 4-0 in those games and has outscored those same schools by an average of 24.3 points.

A win tonight would place the Lady Wildcats would host Wednesday's Region IV co-championship against the winner of third-seeded Buffalo and sixth-seeded Poca.

In Class AAA Region IV, Chapmanville's quest of back-to-back state tournament appearance gets underway with a home game against Lincoln County.

The fourth-seeded Lady Tigers finished the regular season with a 7-12 record while Lincoln County won just four of 22 regular season games.

The Lady Tigers, just like their Logan County rivals, will be a heavy favorite tonight when they host the Lady Panthers.

Chapmanville had no trouble with Lincoln County in the only meeting this season, winning 76-27 at Chapmanville on December 6.

Chapmanville, just like they did when they were a Class AA school, is in one of the toughest regions in the state of West Virginia. The Lady Tigers with a win would advance to face top-seeded, top ranked and reigning Class AA champion Nitro in one of two regional co-championships Thursday.

Third-seeded Winfield hosts sixth-seeded Point Pleasant in Friday's other Class AA Region IV matchup with the winner facing second-seeded and fourth-ranked Wayne in the other co-championship on Thursday.
