LOGAN Freshman Lucas Lambert dropped 25 points and five 3-pointers to lead Class AA No. 6 Logan to a 72-57 victory over eighth-ranked Westside Tuesday night at the Willie Akers Arena.
Lambert made 9-of-16 shots overall and 5-of-11 3-pointers while scoring 16 of his 25 points in the second half to help Logan break a 32-32 first half tie in Mark Hatcher's return to the bench.
Hatcher, who coached the Wildcats for 15 seasons (2000-2015), won 236 games and two state championships (2004-05 Class AA and 2009-10 Class AAA), took over for Jeff Williamson, who led Logan to the Class AAA state tournament last season but left the bench after just one season.
McCormick Ilderton had 15 points and dished out six assists and Ivan Miller added 14 and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for Logan.
Lambert, Ilderton and Miller combined for 21 of the Wildcats 24 points in the third quarter. Leading by seven, 43-36, following Miller's basket with 5:10 to play in the third, it would appear that Logan was in position to run away from the Renegades.
A 7-0 Westside run spanning 1:31 evened the score at 43 when Colten Lester scored with 3:39 remaining in the third.
Ten seconds later, Lambert knocked down his second of three third quarter 3-pointers to give Logan the lead for good, 46-43, with 3:29 to play. The Wildcats would close the quarter on a 13-5 run and led by 56-48 after three quarters.
Westside, who led by as many as eight in the first half and shot nearly 50 percent from the field, was held to just one field goal over the final 3:39 and made just 9-of-30 shots in the second half.
Westside never got closer than eight points the rest of the way and committed eight of its 11 turnovers in the third quarter.
Bryson Blankenship led the Renegades with 20 points on 8-of-21 shooting and Kaiden Vance added 13 points.
The Wildcats scored four points in the first 55 seconds, but the Renegades responded with a 20-8 run and led by eight points, 20-12, on Kaiden Vance's basket with 0:46 remaining before settling for a 20-14 lead after one quarter.
Trailing by seven, Grayson Sanders jumpstarted a 10-0 Logan run with a basket off a backdoor cut with 7:19 to play in the first half. Lambert's layup with 4:18 to play capped the run and gave Logan a 26-23 lead.
Westside rallied to tie the score at 32 on Blankenship's basket with 0:17 remaining.
Logan made half of its shots, 29-for-58, and shot 15-for-26 in the second half while forcing Westside into 18 turnovers.
Both schools will see action in this week's Bob Runyon Memorial at Chapmanville. Westside will play on Saturday against host and Class AAA No. 5 Chapmanville while Logan will battle Class AAA co-No. 9 North Marion on Friday night.
