A fire that climbed the hillside near Stollings Wednesday was still causing problems for firefighters Thursday.
LOGAN Crews are still working to quench an out-of-control wildfire that started Wednesday in Logan.
The fire, initially a 911 call, was reported around 5:48 p.m. from Wildwood Lane Wednesday. According to dispatch at Logan 911, caller said his wife was burning sticks and caught the hillside on fire.
The fire grew quickly up the hillside as the CIty of Logan Fire Department and the West Virginia Division of Forestry responded.
As of Thursday morning, smoke haze dominated the landscape throughout the valley from the Stollings fire and the nearby forest fire that took off Wednesday evening at Whitman Creek. The Cora Volunteer Fire Department made a post to their Facebook page Thursday afternoon advising Whitman residents to take steps to protect their properties while Forestry work to get a handle on the blaze. Remove brush, leaves and other combustible vegetation away from homes and property. Always call 911 if in eminent danger.
Route Ten in was shut down periodically Thursday the Speedway in the Stollings area as fire crews worked to maintain the blaze. The City of Logan Fire Department and Forestry closed the road due to limited access to the mountainside.
According to Captain Nick Ferrell with the City of Logan Fire Department, due to a lack of water access along the mountain, firefighters needed access to the fire hydrants located at Morrison’s Drive-In and Family Dollar in order to refill their water tankers. Ferrell asked motorists to be cautious in the area. Crews can ensure the pass through in a controlled manner if the closing of the road has to continue.
