BOONE COUNTY  A coal miner died Wednesday morning after an accident at the Progress Surface Mine in Twilight.

Officials say 55-year-old coal miner Steven Fields of Chauncey suffered fatal injuries at the Boone County mine. A statement from Governor Patrick Morrisey’s office calls the incident a tragedy. The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

This marks the first death at a West Virginia mine in 2025. The Mine Safety and Health Administration reported five mining-related deaths in the Mountain State last year.
