WEBSTER SPRINGS  The Logan Senior League captured the state championship Monday night with a 7-2 win over Sophia Senior League at Don E. McCourt Field.

With the win, Logan will represent West Virginia in the Senior League Southeast Region Tournament in Safety Harbor, Florida.

Logan will open play July 19 against Tennessee at 5:30 p.m. The double elimination tournament is scheduled to conclude on July 23 and the winner will represent the Southeast Region in the Senior League World Series in Easley, South Carolina July 27- August 3.

Jayce Wolfe’s solo home run leading off the fourth inning sparked a five-run rally and captured momentum from Sophia.

Wolfe’s home run came after Sophia broke a scoreless tie on a Colyn Smith sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.

Wolfe had three hits and scored a pair of runs for Logan and Jaxon McClung got the win after allowing one unearned run on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Wolfe’s home run seemed to rattle Sophia starting pitcher Smith, who allowed just two hits through three innings.

Logan got to Smith for five runs on three hits and took advantage of two Sophia errors to surge out to a 5-1 lead.

With the bases loaded and one out, Tanner Akers attempted to lay down a squeeze bunt as Bentley Williamson broke from third base, Akers was unable to get the bunt as the pitch was fouled off into the mitt of the catcher allowing Williamson to score the go-ahead run.

Rob Ball added a two-run single scoring McClung and Akers and Ball later scored on an error to cap the five-run fourth.

Logan added to its lead in the fifth when Alton Ellis walked with the bases loaded and McClung helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to center to extend the lead to 7-1.

After allowing singles to Landon Hall and Wolfe leading off the fifth, Smith was relieved of his pitching duties. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and walked three in four innings.

Sophia scored a run in the seventh when Andrew Coalson scored on an error.

Hunter Milam had three hits and scored one run while Coalson finished with two hits and scored once for Sophia. Chase Shea had one hit.

Alex Good allowed one run on two hits, striking out four and walking one in 2 1/3 innings of relief for Logan.

Hall had two hits including a double while Adam Baisden and Williamson each had one hit at the plate for Logan.
