Logan mercy rules Beckley, 14-0, in four at Little League Softball State Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE  There were no need for late inning dramatics Tuesday evening as the Logan Little League defeated Beckley Little League 14-0 in four innings Tuesday evening in the West Virginia Little League Softball State Tournament at Charlie McCoy Town Park.

 

Ten different players recorded at least one hit for Logan with six of the 10 driving in at least one run and nine of the 10 scored one run or more in the mercy rule win that kept Logan’s hopes of a state championship alive.

 

Logan advances to the finals of the Mountaineer losers’ bracket where they will face Barboursville at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

 

Barboursville, who beat Logan 9-3 Sunday evening, was a 5-4 loser to Jefferson in the winners’ bracket finals of the Mountaineer Division. The winner of Wednesday’s contest will face Herd Division winner Hite Saunders Thursday evening in the championship round of the West Virginia Little League Softball State Tournament.

 

Logan had plenty of consistency on the offensive end in the first four innings Tuesday. Plating four runs in the, two more in the second and adding four in the third and closing it out with four additional runs in the fourth.

 

Beckley managed just three hits, one each from Raelyn Cline, Chloe Elmore and Sophia Jones.

 

Kaylee Conley tallied two hits for Logan, including a triple, with two runs and one RBI. Kenlee Tomblin also had two hits, driving in one. Taylor Akers had a double, drove in two and scored two times. Ella Graham had a triple and drove in two runs while Rylan Lambert tripled to go along with one RBI and Peyton Sigmon had one hit and one RBI.

 

Myah Kirkendall had one hit and scored three times, Abby Ellis singled and scored two runs and Daphne Ellis and Cali Williamson had one hit each for Logan.

 

Logan scored five runs off eight Beckley errors and was able to steal home twice.

 

Kirkendall started the scoring in the first inning when she scored on an error to make it 1-0. Sigmon singled to score Conley then scored on an error to extend Logan’s lead to 3-0. Akers scored on a second Beckley error for a 4-0 lead.

 

That was plenty of run support for Akers, who allowed three hits in three innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Daphne Ellis worked a scoreless fourth striking out two batters.

 

Williamson scored on an error in the second and Conley tripled to plate Kirkendall to give Logan a 6-0 lead.

 

Four more runs crossed the plate in the third with Logan getting a run-scoring double from Akers, a two-run triple from Graham and a Lambert triple to surge to a 10-0 lead.

 

Kirkendall and Conley stole home in the fourth to extend the lead to 12-0, Abby Ellis scored on an error and Tomblin singled home the final run in a four-run Logan fourth.

 

Catena Webb was the losing pitcher for Beckley after allowing eight runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings. Five of the eight runs were earned as Webb struck out five batters in the circle.
