LRMC awarded "A" Hospital Safety Grade by Leapfrog Group

LOGAN  A national hospital safety and standards organization says Logan Regional Medical Center has improved its patient safety.

Logan Regional has been awarded an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that evaluates hospital safety and care standards. According to an announcement issued Friday, this recognition makes LRMC the only hospital in West Virginia to receive an “A” in Leapfrog’s Fall 2024 assessments.

Leapfrog assigns grades ranging from “A” to “F” based on more than thirty national performance measures, including errors, accidents, injuries, and infections. This fall, only thirty-two percent of approximately three thousand hospitals nationwide earned the top grade. Logan Regional improved from a “B” grade in Leapfrog’s previous review in the spring.

Hospital CEO David Brash attributed the achievement to a sustained commitment to safety. “We’ve gradually improved our grade over the years and to be the only hospital in West Virginia to attain the top mark is quite an honor,” Brash said. He added that the designation underscores the hospital’s focus on delivering high-quality care in a safe environment.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only national program that solely evaluates preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries, which are responsible for more than 500 patient deaths each day in the United States. The ratings are peer-reviewed and updated twice a year.

Logan Regional’s safety grade follows several other accolades in 2024, including being named a Center of Distinction by Healogics for its advanced wound care services and receiving Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification from The Joint Commission. The hospital also launched a rural general surgery residency program in partnership with Marshall University.
