PARKERSBURG The Man Hillbillies are ranked 10th in the first set of the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission playoff ratings for Class A.
The Hillbillies (2-1, 5.93 rating), who are 10th in the weekly MetroNews power rankings, are behind No. 1 Petersburg (3-0, 10.00), No. 2 Tug Valley (3-0, 9.33), No. 3 River View (2-0, 9.00), No. 4 Wahama (3-0, 7.67), No. 5 Meadow Bridge (3-0, 7.00), co-No. 6 Madonna (3-0, 6.33) and Valley (Wetzel) (3-0, 6.33) and co-No. 8 Tucker County (3-0, 6.00) and Webster County (3-0, 6.00).
Doddridge County (2-1, 5.67) and Pendleton County (2-1, 5.67) are tied for 11th, Greenbrier West (2-1, 5.07) is 13th followed by Sherman (2-1, 4.93), Wirt County (2-1, 4.80), Tolsia (2-1, 4.63), Tyler Consolidated (1-1, 4.40), Cameron (2-1, 4.33) and Montcalm (2-1, 4.33) share the 18th sport and St. Marys (1-2, 3.80) round out the top 20.
Man, who is coming off a 35-21 loss to Class AA co-No. 4 Westside (3-0), will look to get back on the winning track Friday when they travel to Class AA co-No. 16 Mingo Central (1-2).
The top 16 in each class at the end of the final regular season ratings qualify for the postseason.
Logan (1-2, 4.00) and Chapmanville (1-2, 3.70) failed to crack the top 16 in the first set of playoff ratings and are ranked 21st and 22nd respectively in Class AA. Logan hosts AA No. 3 Poca Friday night while Chapmanville hosts Class AAA co-No. 8 Nitro.
A fourth class has been added to football this season. For the first time ever, West Virginia has four classes.
Spring Mills (3-0, 16.33) is the top-rated team in Class AAAA followed by Berkeley County rivals Martinsburg (3-0, 14.33) and Hedgesville (2-0, 13.50) in the second and third spot respectively. George Washington (3-0, 13.00) is fourth and Wheeling Park (2-1, 12.17) rounding out the top five.
Parkersburg South (2-1, 12.00), Woodrow Wilson (2-1, 11.00), Morgantown (2-1, 10.53) occupy the six through eight spots and Huntington (2-1. 10.17) and Hurricane (2-1, 10.17) are tied for ninth.
Rounding out the top 16 are No. 11 Washington (2-1, 9.50), No. 12 University (1-1, 7.50), No. 13 Jefferson (1-2, 7.33), No. 14 Parkersburg (1-2, 5.00), No. 15 Cabell Midland (0-2, 3.15) and No. 16 Musselman (0-3, 2.50).
Bridgeport (3-0, 14.00) holds down the top spot in Class AAA with Herbert Hoover (3-0, 13.00) and Fairmont Senior (3-0, 13.00) sharing the second spot followed by No. 4 Princeton (3-0, 12.33) and No. 5 North Marion (3-0, 12.00).
Ripley (3-0, 11.00) is sixth, Robert C. Byrd (2-1, 8.53) seventh, Nitro (2-1, 8.13), Oak Hill (2-1, 8.13) and Winfield (2-1, 8.13) tied for eighth.
Elkins (2-1, 7.97) is 11th, Hampshire (2-1, 7.93) 12th, Point Pleasant (1-1, 7.87) 13th, Capital (1-1, 7.20) at No. 14, Shady Spring (2-1, 6.57) is 15th and East Fairmont (1-2, 6.00) occupying the final playoff spot at No. 16.
The rest of the top 20 has Greenbrier East (1-2, 4.8) and Weir (1-2, 4.80) tied for 17th, Lewis County (1-2, 4.60) currently 19th and Spring Valley (1-2, 3.83) rounding out the top 20.
Leading the way in Class AA is Roane County (3-0, 12.33) just ahead of Frankfort (2-0, 12.00), followed by Poca (3-0, 10.00) with Wayne (2-0, 9.00) and Westside (3-0, 9.00) sharing the fourth spot.
Six through 10 sees Philip Barbour (2-1, 8.80), South Harrison (3-0, 8.67) and Williamstown (3-0, 8.67) are tied for seventh, Independence (2-1, 8.13) ninth and Clay County (2-1, 7.57) 10th.
The rest of the top 20 has Moorefield (1-2, 6.00) Liberty (Harrison) (1-2, 5.67), Bluefield (1-2, 5.53), Scott (1-1, 4.95), Lincoln (1-2, 4.80), Mingo Central (1-2, 4.53) and Wheeling Central (1-2, 4.53) tied for 16th, Midland Trail (1-2, 4.50) Nicholas County (1-2, 4.33) and Liberty (Raleigh) (1-2, 4.20).
