Man arraigned on First Degree Murder charge for alleged fatal shooting of another man in stomach

ETHEL A man is in jail on a charge of murder following an early morning shooting in the Ethel area of Logan County.


23-year-old Daris James Stanton, of Madison, is charged with murder.


West Virginia State Police say it all started with a single vehicle accident on Route 17 around three o’clock Sunday morning.


Police were called to the scene where they discovered the driver, identified as 42-year-old Walter Elmore, with a gunshot wound in his abdomen. Elmore was transported to Logan Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.


According to the criminal complaint filed in Logan County Magistrate Court, Trooper Z K Bragg obtained statements from witnesses that said Elmore was shot inside a residence at Enchanted Circle by Stanton.


Stanton was arrested later Sunday morning during a traffic stop along Pond Fork Road in Boone County.


Stanton was arraigned Sunday night by Logan County Magistrate Joe Mendez and charged with murder.


Only circuit court can set bond in capital cases. Stanton remains in jail at the Southwestern Regional Jail without bond.
