One prisoner sentenced and one pleads guilty for "shank" at Beckley prison.



BECKLEY One inmate sentenced and another pleaded guilty Friday, June 2 for possession of a weapon in a federal prison.


According to federal court documents and statements in court, 27 year old Matthew Jackson, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Beckley, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison for possessing a hand-made “shank.” Prison sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release,


On September 3, 2022, prison staff conducted a pat-down search of Jackson and found the weapon in Jackson’s underwear, according to a state from US Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia, Will Thompson.


Also on Friday, 24-year-old Quordell Tarver, another inmate at FCI Beckley, pleaded guilty to possessing a similar weapon by an inmate of a federal prison. Back on October 22, 2022, an prison staff member conducted a visual search of Tarver and found a “shank” concealed in Tarver’s underwear.


Tarver is scheduled to be sentenced on September 22, 2023, and faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
