LOGAN Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College has surpassed its $50,000 goal to endow the Sgt. Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship, established in honor of Maynard, who was killed in the line of duty on June 2, 2023, in Mingo County, supports first responders or their immediate family members pursuing education at Southern. Anthony Stollings and Joshua Smith are the first recipients.

To fund the scholarship, the Southern Foundation launched an annual softball tournament and received a mass of donations. The $50,000 endowment will be invested, generating returns to support the scholarship long-term.

Crystal Cook, Southern’s Development Coordinator, described the fundraising effort as one of the most rewarding experiences of her career. She noted the deep emotional impact of seeing the community rally together to honor Maynard’s legacy, emphasizing that the scholarship represents more than just financial assistance – it’s a lasting tribute to his life and service.

Maynard’s wife, Rachel, expressed gratitude for the widespread support, saying she’s thankful for the outpouring of support and donations. She said her hope is that her husband’s legacy will “help others pursue their education for years to come.”

As part of its ongoing support for the law enforcement community, the Southern Foundation will sponsor a Giving Tuesday campaign, “Shop and Go with a Local Hero,” to assist local Shop with a Cop programs in counties served by the college.
