Strong second half carries Tigers past Warriors

NEW RICHMOND Up three at halftime, Class AA No. 3 Chapmanville pulled away in the second half from sixth-ranked Wyoming East as the Tigers defeated the Warriors 60-47 on Tuesday night at Wyoming East High School.


A 13-5 scoring run over 6:22 during the third and fourth quarter gave Chapmanville a double-digit lead following Sal Dean’s jumper with 3:05 to play in the fourth quarter.


Chapmanville’s lead reached as many as 14 points on two occasions in the fourth quarter as Wyoming East closed the gap to nine points, 55-46, on Bryson Huff’s basket with 1:10 remaining, however, the Tigers closed out the scoring with a 5-1 run to hand the Warriors third home loss this season.


Dean scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the opening quarter to lead Chapmanville in scoring. Dean finished 8 of 17 from the field and helped the Tigers overcome an early three-point deficit.


Garrett Mitchell’s 3 with 1:51 to play in the opening quarter gave Wyoming East a 12-9 lead before Dean closed the quarter with five straight points to give the Tigers a 14-12 lead after one quarter.


Chapmanville’s lead grew to eight points, 20-12, with 6:15 to play before halftime on Isaiah Smith’s basket that capped an 11-0 Tigers run.


Jackson Danielson’s basket ended a 4:15 scoring drought for Wyoming East bringing the Warriors to within six points, 20-14, with 5:38 to play.


The Warriors closed the gap to five points with 4:32 to play before halftime on a free throw from Cole Lambert, however a 3 from Dean put Chapmanville up eight, 23-15, with 4:20 to play in the first half.


Wyoming East responded with a 7-0 run over the next 2:32 to draw within one point, 23-22, on Lambert’s jumper before Brody Dalton’s basket gave the Tigers a 25-22 halftime lead.


Chapmanville opened the second half on an 11-4 run, surging ahead 36-27 following a pair of Zion Blevins free throws with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter.


Lambert led Wyoming East with 14 points while Mitchell finished with 12, Huff eight and Danielson seven points. The Warriors shot 16 of 57 from the field, was 3 of 10 from the 3-point line and 12 of 24 from the foul line.


Blevins scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half for Chapmanville while Dalton finished with a double-double scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Isaiah Smith added eight points for the Tigers, who were 20 of 39 from the field, made 3 of 14 3-point attempts and shot 17 of 22 from the free throw line.


Wyoming East drops to 11-4 and will travel to second-ranked Bluefield Friday night.


Chapmanville improved to 12-1 with the win and remains undefeated against West Virginia competition. The Tigers will look to remain unbeaten in the Cardinal Conference when they travel to Winfield to face the Class AAA No. 6 Generals Thursday night.
