MAN Isaiah Sanders scored 18 points to lead Huntington St. Joe’s over Man 67-38 on Monday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.
Sanders shot 6 of 12 from the field and was 4 of 9 from the 3-point line for the Irish. Caden Ehrim posted a double-double finishing with 16 points and 16 rebounds while Grady Paynter recorded 16 points, all of which coming in the first half, on 6 of 11 shooting from the field.
Paynter scored six points and assisted on a basket in an 11-0 run that erased a 4-2 Man lead to give St. Joe’s a 13-4 lead with 2:37 to play in the first quarter.
Man got a pair of 3’s from Caleb Vance and Devon Sanders to close the deficit to 15-10 with 1:33 to play. Paynter’s basket with 52 seconds remaining gave the Irish a 17-10 first quarter lead.
Sanders basket with 3:25 remaining before halftime gave the Irish a 29-15 lead.
In desperate need of a basket, Man turned to Vance, who drained a 3-pointer from the left wing, to cut the deficit to 29-18 with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter.
Vance, who was hit on the shot and knocked to the ground, was whistled for a technical foul six seconds later after apparently complaining about the nonfoul call to a official.
St. Joe’s would end the half on a 10-0 run and led 39-18 at halftime. Man would miss its final six shots of the second quarter and would go 0 for 11 from the field in the third quarter as the Irish outscored the Hillbillies 15-0 in the third quarter to surge ahead 54-18 after three quarters.
Colton Miller ended the 10:49 scoring drought with a basket to start the fourth quarter, Man’s first successful field goal after 16 straight misses. The Hillbillies would go on to score 20 points in the fourth quarter but were unable to dig themselves out of a first half hole.
Devon Sanders and Vance led Man with nine points each. Miller and Trace Doty each had six points, Justin Mullins had five and Landon Cantrell finished with two points, five rebounds and four steals for the Hillbillies.
The Irish outrebounded the Hillbillies 48-23, including a 16-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Four players had at least seven rebounds for the Irish led by Ehirim’s 16, Sanders finished with nine and Jackson and Paynter seven each.
St. Joe’s made 23 of 57 shots from the field, was 10 of 27 from 3-point range and went 11 of 18 from the free throw line.
Man made just 14 of its 52 shots, connected on 9 of 23 3-points and was only 1 of 4 from the free throw line.
St. Joe’s will host Gilmer County Monday in the Class A Region 4 Section 2 tournament.
Man (2-18), who has lost eight straight, will close out the regular season Friday night at home against Van.
