CHAPMANVILLE Nitro scored three runs in the eighth inning to hand Chapmanville a second consecutive loss Thursday night as the Wildcats defeated the Class A No. 1 Tigers 9-6 at Ted Ellis Field.
The Wildcats plated four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead before the Tigers plated one in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie it at 6 and send the game to extra innings.
A fielding error allowed Nitro to score the go ahead run as Beau Kelley came in to score giving the Wildcats a 7-6 lead. Sam Sheets drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-6 and Devon Hatfield singled to increase the lead to 9-6.
Jace Wilkinson retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the win in relief. He allowed one run on one hit in two innings while striking out three, walking one and hitting one batter.
Sheets received a no decision after allowing five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk in six innings for Nitro.
Jacob Topping had a run-scoring double in the seventh to bring Chapmanville within one run, 6-5, and Brody Dalton scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 6.
AJ Motto was the losing pitcher after allowing three runs on one hit and two walks in 1/3 inning.
Topping was credited with a no-decision after allowing six runs – two earned – on five hits in six innings. Topping struck out 10 and walked six. Ian Plumley walked two and allowed no hits in one inning and Andrew Farley allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one in 2/3 innings.
Hatfield went 2-for-4 with one RBI for Nitro and Luke Buckner, Carter Jones and Noah Reed each had one hit and one RBI.
Topping was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI while Dalton was 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI for Chapmanville. Trey Butcher went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Joey Canterbury, Luke Knight and Eli Surgoine each had one hit.
Belfry (KY) 15, Man 5 (Six Innings)
Belfry plated six runs in the sixth inning to snap Man’s three-game winning streak, defeating the Hillbillies 15-5 in six innings.
Man trailed 4-0 after three innings but cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Cam Gerace brought home John McCoy with a sacrifice fly and Braxton Messer stole home to bring Man within, 4-2, heading to the bottom of the fourth.
That momentum would be short lived as the Pirates (11-10) scored six times in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead.
Chase Varney allowed four runs on two hits in five innings while striking out eight and walking three to earn the win for Belfry.
Messer allowed nine runs – five earned – on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked five for the Hillbillies.
Noah Brown was 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs for Belfry. Jonathan Banks went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, Isaiah Stanley 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs and Varney was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Messer was 2-for-3 with two runs at the plate for Man while Luke Haney went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Bo Thompson was 1-for-3. Gerace drove in two runs for the Hillbillies.
