Tug Valley Panthers Regional Champs

In high school basketball action, the #2 ranked Tug Valley Panthers took home the Region 4 Section 1 Championship last night, as they stunned the #1 ranked Man Hillbillies on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Joby Sorrell with no time left for a 53-50 win from Willie Akers Arena.

The game was tight the entire first half with neither team taking more than a four-point lead, and ended with the Hillbillies in the lead 23-22 at intermission.

Man came out on fire in the second half and extended their lead as large as nine points in the fourth quarter before the Panthers started to heat up, and went on an 11-2 run to tie the game with two minutes to play.

After two missed Hillbilly free throws with 23 seconds left Tug Valley held for the last shot and found Sorrell open on the left wing to drain a three, and give the Panthers the title, and a home match-up next week for the right to go to the state tournament, while Man will go on the road to attempt to qualify for states.

Tug Valley was led in scoring by Caleb May who posted 19 points in the win, while Austin Ball closed the game with 19 points as well to lead the Hillbillies.

Game times and opponents were not available at press time for next week’s regional match-ups.
