LOGAN Class A No. 2 Tug Valley survived a third quarter by Class AA No. 3 Logan to escape Willie Akers Arena with a 72-65 victory Tuesday night over the Wildcats.
Braydun Ferris scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter as Tug Valley went on a 10-0 run to break a 58-58 tie and help the Panthers improve to 8-2 on the season.
It was Ferris' basket with 57 seconds left in the third quarter that gave the Panthers the lead for good and came after Tug Valley squandered away a 19-point first half lead that saw the Wildcats outscore them 26-5 over a stretch of 8:08 between the second and third quarters.
Ferris was one of five Panthers, four starters and one reserve, to reach double figures. Ashton Davis had 12, Kaden Hale and Ethan Ferrell, who came in off the bench, each had 11 and Bryson Elia 10 for Tug Valley, who won its fourth straight game.
Zayden Sherod led Logan with 19 points, Lucas Lambert had 15, Ivan Miller 14 and McCormick Ilderton 13. Sherod and Miller posted double-doubles for the Wildcats finishing with 12 and 10 rebounds respectively while Ilderton dished out a team-high seven assists.
Logan lost for the second time in its last three games to fall to 9-2 on the season and shot a woeful 1-of-15 (6.7 percent) on 3-pointers and was just 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the free throw line.
The same couldn't be said for Tug Valley, who shot 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from 3 and was 20-of-25 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.
Tug Valley led 10-8 after a close opening quarter, before Logan tied it at 10 on Lambert's basket with 7:49 to play before halftime, but the Panthers responded with a 25-6 run over the next 6:27 to take what seemed to be a commanding 19-point lead, 35-16, on a reverse layup from Davis with 1:22 to play before halftime.
Ferrell knocked down three second quarter 3-pointers and Elia scored six of his 10 points during the run to give the Panthers their biggest lead of the evening.
Logan closed the quarter with four straight points to close the gap to 35-20 at halftime.
Trailing 40-24 following a Hale 3-pointer, Logan reeled off 14 straight points as Lambert and Sherod combined for 12 points to close to within two, 40-38, when Sherod scored in the paint with 3:28 to play in the quarter.
Logan took its first lead, 44-43, since very early in the first quarter when Sherod scored at the rim with 1:37 remaining in the third.
A pair of free throws from Davis gave Tug Valley a 45-44, before Lambert gave the Wildcats their final lead of the evening, 46-45, with 1:05 to play.
Tug Valley countered with a 6-0 run to take a 51-46 lead before Miller scored with three seconds remaining to bring Logan to within three, 51-48, after three quarters of play.
The Wildcats tied it at 58 on Ilderton's basket with 4:06 to play, but the Panthers went on a 10-0 run in less than three minutes to take a 10-point lead, 68-58 with 1:07 to play following a pair of free throws from Davis.
Logan got within five points on two different occasions in the final 1:07, but the Panthers iced the game by going 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 29 seconds.
