LOGAN Zayden Sherod scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter to help Class AAA No. 5 Logan snap a four-game losing streak and defeat Mingo Central 76-28 Thursday night at the Willie Akers Arena.
The Miners trailed by five at the end of the first quarter and was down just two, 20-18, when Caden Porter hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter before the Wildcats outscored the Miners 56-10 the rest of the way.
Logan jumped out to a 12-3 lead early, but Mingo Central reeled off nine straight points to tie the game 12, which prompted coach Mark Hatcher to empty his bench in favor of three freshmen and two sophomores.
Two freshmen, Zo Murphy and Grayson Sanders, provided Logan with the spark they would need with a pair of two 3-pointers and a layup as part of an 8-0 run.
Murphy scored five straight points to give Logan a 17-12 lead and Sanders drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 20-12 before the Miners cut it to five at the end of the first quarter.
Murphy had 14 points and Sanders added seven off the bench as the Wildcats outscored the Miners 26-5 in bench points and forced 25 Mingo Central turnovers.
Mingo Central made five field goals including two 3-pointers in the game's first eight minutes but struggled shooting the ball in the final 24 minutes making just six field goal attempts.
Lucas Lambert had 15 and Ivan Miller 11 to give the Wildcats four double-figure scorers.
Devin Maynard scored 11 points to lead Mingo Central (3-18) and Porter added six points. No other player had more than four points.
Logan (13-7) will host fourth-ranked Wyoming East Saturday night and close the regular season at Class A No. 1 Tug Valley on Tuesday.
