LOGAN Julius Clancy had a game-high 13 points, and Class AAA No. 6 Logan defeated Robert C. Byrd 50-34 in the Big 10/Cardinal Conference Challenge Friday night at Willie Akers Arena winning in coach Jeff Williamson's coaching debut.
Williamson was named Logan coach on August 1, 2023 in place of former coach Zach Green, who resigned on April 30, 2023.
Clancy was the only player to score in double figures and one of eight Wildcats to crack the scoring column. Six of the eight had at least five points or more with Matt Hatfield finishing with nine points, Cole Blankenship had seven points, Derek Browning six and Zayden Sherod five points.
McCormick Ilderton and Ivan Miller each had four points and Devin Maynard two points for Logan.
Logan Boyce led Robert C. Byrd with seven points, Dylon Stephens had six and Camyn Newsuan and Syncere Newsuan each had four points for the Eagles.
Logan held Robert C. Byrd scoreless for the first 6:22 until Stephens' free throw broke the scoring drought for the Eagles with 0:38 remaining in the first quarter.
Logan led 13-1 after one quarter of play and held a 15-1 lead before Boyce hit a 3 for Robert C. Byrd's first field goal with 6:38 to play in the first half.
Boyce's 3 was the start of a 12-3 Eagles run the cut the deficit to five, 18-13.
Logan closed the half on a 5-0 run and lead 23-13 at halftime. The Wildcats stretched the lead to 18 points in the second half and never trailed the entire game.
Robert C. Byrd (0-1) will host Philip Barbour Wednesday night while Logan (1-0) hosts Wayne Tuesday night in the Cardinal Conference opener for both teams.
