The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported 970 additional infections of COVID-19 Wednesday.
The new infections boosted the state’s active cases up to 6,462.
Twenty-two additional deaths were reported. Since the onset of the outbreak, a total of 4,698 Mountain State residents have succumbed to COVID-19.
Hospitalizations are down slightly with a total 520 patients hospitalized for the virus statewide. There are 168patients in intensive care units and 87 of those patients require ventilators.
More than 1,060,000 West Virginians have received at least one dose of vaccine.
The latest county alert map published by the DHHR has sixteen counties in the red zone including Boone, Lincoln and Mingo counties.
The map measures the severity of community spread within each county. Red indicates the most severe spread of coronavirus in the state, followed by orange, gold, yellow and green.
Twenty-one counties are orange including Logan and Wayne.
Eight counties are gold including Wyoming.
Four counties are yellow and six counties are green.
