COAL MOUNTAIN A coal miner was killed this morning in Wyoming County.
According to a release from the Governor’s Office, Virgil Paynter of Lynco was fatally injured at the CM Energy Operations LP Surface Mine in Coal Mountain. The incident occurred at 8:42 Thursday morning while he was operating an excavator.
Officials from the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training and the Mine Safety and Health Administration are on the mine site as of this morning conducting the investigation.
Governor Jim Justice calling it “a tragedy beyond belief,” this marks the first fatality in a West Virginia coal mine in 2024.
